چکیده

This paper presents theoretical, computational and experimental aspects of the instability development in the ow of thin uid lms. The theoretical part involves basic uid mechanics and presents derivation of the thin lm equation using lubrication approximation. Simpli ed version of this equation is then analyzed analytically using linear stability analysis, and also numerically. The results are then compared directly to experiments. The experimental part outlines the setup, as well as data acquisition and analysis. This immediate comparison to experiments is very useful for gaining better insight into interpretation of various theoretical and computational results.

Instabilities in the flow of thin films on heterogeneous surfaces

We present computational and experimental results involving instability development in the gravity-driven flow of thin fluid films on heterogeneous surfaces, with particular emphasis on the dynamics of the fluid fronts. We show that heterogeneity of the solid surface can have a significant effect on the flow dynamics. Since the effect of heterogeneity often competes with the basic instability m...

Gravity- and Shear-driven Thin Films Flow on Heated Microstructured Walls

A model describing the behaviour of the gravityand shear-driven liquid films on heated microstructured walls is developed. The hydrodynamic stability of the film flow is investigated using the long-wave theory. It is shown that the longitudinal grooves stabilize the film flow both when the wall is completely or only partially covered by the film. The influence of the thermocapillarity on the fi...

Flow and instability of thin films on a cylinder and sphere

We investigate the dynamics of thin films driven by gravity on the outer surface of a cylinder and sphere. The surface is rigid, stationary and the axis of the cylinder is horizontal. An instantaneous release of a constant volume of fluid at the top of the cylinder or sphere results initially in a two-dimensional or axisymmetric current respectively. The resultant flow of a thin film of fluid i...

Flow of thin films on patterned surfaces

We present fully nonlinear time-dependent simulations of the gravity driven flow of thin wetting liquid films. The computations of the flow down a homogeneous substrate show that the contact line where liquid, solid, and gas phase meet becomes unstable and develops patterns. These computations are extended to inhomogeneous surfaces, and show that inhomogeneity can induce instability of the flui...

Instabilities of Thin Viscous Liquid Film Flowing down a Uniformly Heated Inclined Plane

Instabilities of a thin viscous film flowing down a uniformly heated plane are investigated in this study. The heating generates a surface tension gradient that induces thermocapillary stresses on the free surface. Thus, the film is not only influenced by gravity and mean surface tension but also the thermocapillary force is acting on the free surface. Moreover, the heat transfer at the free su...
